Powered microneedling devices (prescription)

Prescription device code

Records FDA files under its code for powered microneedle devices, motorized pens and systems that puncture the skin for aesthetic use. Listed separately here as prescription devices, not consumer at-home devices.

26 records from 2018 to 2026, filed by 18 companies, including 1 De Novo grant (DEN160029). We quote the indications for use for 19 of them from FDA's PDFs.

What FDA's code QAI covers

FDA device name
“Powered Microneedle Device”
FDA definition
“A powered microneedle device is a device using one or more needles to mechanically puncture and injure skin tissue for aesthetic use.”
Physical state
“Powered microneedle pen with single use needle cartridge and multi-use motorized base.”
Technical method
“The skin is mechanically punctured to the point of pinpoint bleeding to create injuries in the skin.”
Target area
“Skin, face, and body.”
Regulation
21 CFR 878.4430: “A microneedling device for aesthetic use is a device using one or more needles to mechanically puncture and injure skin tissue for aesthetic use. This classification does not include devices intended for transdermal delivery of topical products such as cosmetics, drugs, or biologics.”
Device class
Class II

Quoted from FDA's Product Classification database entry for QAI, checked October 12, 2026.

Prescription devices

This code is listed separately because its devices aren't consumer at-home devices. The code's regulation is 21 CFR 878.4430, created by FDA's De Novo grant for the SkinPen Precision System (FDA De Novo decision summary DEN160029). That decision summary says:

“The sale, distribution, and use of the SkinPen Precision System is restricted to prescription use in accordance with 21 CFR 801.109.”

We can't read each record's prescription or over-the-counter box from FDA's documents, so read each record's own indications and labeling. FDA says it has authorized microneedling devices for specific uses:

“The FDA has legally authorized microneedling devices to improve the appearance of facial acne scars, facial wrinkles, and abdominal scars in patients aged 22 years or older.”

FDA also warns:

“The FDA is aware of several microneedling devices that are not legally marketed.”

Manual rollers and stamps sold for home use aren't in this code, and we don't list them.

All 26 records, newest first

Each record is one FDA decision about the device named in it, for the use in its indications statement. The company that filed may be the brand on the box or the manufacturer that makes it for the brand.

Records are grouped by FDA product code; a record's own indications can be narrower, broader or different from the group name, so read each one. We quote an indications statement only when it comes from a text page of FDA's PDF (not a scan) and every word checks out; otherwise the entry says why and links the PDF, which is the authority.
